The Data Act is almost here!
Set to take effect on Friday 12 September 2025, the European Data Act is intended as a major milestone in unlocking the potential of industrial data. By establishing rules for data access and sharing, the legislation shall empower consumers to access data from their connected devices, ensures businesses have fair access to data held by others, and simplify transitions between cloud service providers requiring far reaching implementation measures for affected companies.
In addition to promoting innovation through a legally defined data value distribution, the legislation shall offer protections for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) against unfair contract terms. It also enhances data security by preventing unauthorised transfers of non-personal data and provides mechanisms for public authorities to access private-sector data in exceptional circumstances.
