Technical work aims to finalise European Media Freedom Act

Technical “trilogue” meetings with the aim of finalising the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) took place from 8-10 February, presided over the current Belgian Presidency of the Council.

The EMFA aims to promote media pluralism and independence in the EU, with safeguards against political interference in editorial decisions. However, some proposed measures regarding content moderation by online platforms have proven to be controversial with established media. This has necessitated the introduction of a “media exception” to give media outlets a 24-hour grace period for content moderation decisions by large online platforms affecting editorial content.
